I
thought that a great way to describe the Beta Omega house is
to republish a letter written on May 10, 1962 by the then
Chairman of the General House Committee. The letter was
included in the fraternity's newsletter, KAPPA'S EYE, which
has now developed into this web page. The house, as well as
the fraternity itself, has come a long way. The house has seen
a fire, a flood and numerous snow storms. And remarkably, it
still stands as strong as the bonds that binds the brothers
within. Please join me in this brief walk down the halls of
Beta Omega history, and I hope you will all enjoy this look
back:
Dear
Brother in Kappa Psi:
We are
very happy to inform you that Beta Omega Chapter is now
occupying its new chapter house which was purchased last
December. Securing a permanent home has been one of our most
important objectives and we are sure that this is good news to
you.
The
chapter house is located at 1247 W. Allegheny Ave. which is
less than two blocks from the college and next door to the Psi
Omega Dental Fraternity House. As you will note in the
picture, it is a three story building of brick and stone
construction and in very good condition.
The
house is ample in size for the needs of about fifty members.
There are six large bed rooms, two bath rooms and fine chapter
rooms on the two upper floors. The first floor is spacious and
there is a large basement which will be the center of most of
our social activities. Many of you will remember the basements
in former houses....well this one is far larger and will be
much more serviceable when the final renovations have been
completed. We have already completed some of the alterations
and made repairs with the usual painting, thanks to some fine
help from a few gifted members.
Fraternally
yours,
Theodore
S. Kallelis
Chairman,
General House Committee
This
letter describes the Chapter House as it stood in 1962. Today
the house is as stated above with the addition of a second
side. As mentioned the house was located next door to a dental
fraternity. The dental fraternity in now a part of the Beta
Omega house. We now have 13 bedrooms, three bathrooms, a pool
room, full service laundry facility and an eat in kitchen. The
house came under fire in recent years (no pun intended) when
the local fire department inspected the house and mandated us
to install a $12000.00 fire alarm system. It has taken us
three years to recover from that debt. A special debt of
gratitude goes out to our Chapter GCD Dr. Tull J. Speaker
whose generosity allowed us to keep the doors of Beta Omega
open. In honor of Dr. Speaker's dedication to our chapter, the
brothers have remodeled our library and renamed it the Tully
J. Speaker Memorial Library.
Today
there are currently 13 residents that reside in the House. The
House is utilized for weekly chapter meetings, parties and
other social, professional, and school events.
If
anyone is interested in touring the Kappa Psi House,
the Brothers of Beta Omega cordially extend an
invitation to visit:
